Groundwater models for safety analysis of low level radioactive waste repositories

Groundwater models have been developed to assess the safety performance of low level radioactive waste repositories for different site conditions. The source term depends on the leach rate coefficient which is considered as a function of the waste matrix integrity. The input of each radionuclide into the burial facility is assumed to be 1 TBq for simplicity. The single layer model considers direct entry of leached radionuclides into a sandy aquifer. The double layer model is applicable to situations where the leached radionuclides enter into an aquifer after passing through a saturated clay zone of finite dimensions. A radiological model is used to translate the concentrations of radionuclides in groundwater into an annual effective dose to a member of the critical group
