Comparative photoluminescent study of PVDF/Eu3+ and PEO/Eu3+ electrospun nanofibers in photonic fabric

The photoluminnescent trivalent rare earth europium ion (Eu3+) is well incorporated with polymers like Poly (vinylidene fluoride) PVDF and Poly(ethylene oxide) PEO to fabricate the PVDF/Eu3+ and PEO/Eu3+ nanofibers by electrospinning technique. The fabricated nanofibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). Photoluminescence of PVDF/Eu3+ and PEO/Eu3+ nanofibers has been made based on the measurement of the emission spectra. The comparative study of photoluminescence properties of PVDF/Eu3+ and PEO/Eu3+ nanofibers shows that PVDF/Eu3+ nanofibers have good emission spectra due to 5D0 → 7F2 transition which is responsible for the typical red luminescence observed in europium (III) with high intensity ratio (5D0→ 7F2 / 5D0→ 7F1) than the PEO/Eu3+ nanofibers. This is because Eu3+ ions dispersed in the PVDF molecule chain and there could be some more interaction between the group of PVP polymer and Eu3+ ions. This result in uniform distribution of the Eu3+ in the PVDF nanofibers substantially enhanced the interactions between individual Eu3+ molecules and neighboring chain segments of PVDF. In PVDF/Eu3+ nanofibers the majority of the Eu3+ ions distributed in the PVDF nanofibers matrix as compared to PEO. Such types of nanofibers are found to be used in designing photoluminescent fabric and in textile industries.
