B ritish archeologist Christine Finn spent the year 2000 in Silicon Valley, viewing it from a perspective not normally brought to bear on a place where the future is the stock in trade. Present during the valley’s plunge from boom to bust, she interweaves investigations of orchard farms, parking lots, and computer museums with interviews of Silicon Valley denizens to produce a temporal snapshot of the valley in her recently released book Artifacts: An Archeologist’s Year in Silicon Valley (MIT Press, 2001). Associate Editor Stephen Cass talked to her about how she unearthed her tale.
