A Control Algorithm of Dynamic Backlight Based on Regional Difference Between the Maximum and the Average

Algorithms of dynamic backlight have disadvantages of complicated formulas and slower running speed, expect the maximum value and the average value methods. Therefore, a new algorithm of dynamic backlight based on the maximum value and the average value methods was proposed by extracting the advantages of the two methods. The new algorithm made use of the ratio value between the difference of the above two methods and the maximum value to analyze that whether the detail of images is rich or not, then measured the overall brightness of images according to the average value, thereby an agreeable gray value from every district was selected as the backlight brightness value of the district. Results of simulation with Matlab show that under the premise of ensuring image quality, the new algorithm not only cuts down the backlight brightness to save the electric power consumption, but involves less computation.
