The assessment of elastic follow-up in high-temperature piping systems—Some example problems

Abstract It is the aim of this paper to examine the performance of several simplified methods for the creep analysis of elevated temperature piping systems and for the assessment of elastic follow-up. Initially existing example analyses and tests on inelastic piping systems which are available in the literature are reviewed. Three simplified methods identified in the first part of this paper are compared to detailed solutions obtained using the ABAQUS finite element program for several simple planar piping configurations. This study demonstrates the practicability of using so-called ‘isochronous’ generalised stress/strain curves to assess the potential a piping system has for follow-up without resource to detailed analysis.
