Hearing and the neural detection of acoustic patterns.

The neurophysiology of perception is discussed in terms of hearing and its role in adaptive behavior. The complexity which characterizes sounds of biological significance is contrasted with the emphasis on simple stimuli in the historical development of hearing theories and auditory neurophysiology. The auditory pathway is compared with the visual pathway for the purpose of deriving relationships between its information-processing task and its neurophysiological organization. Two concepts of the acoustic message are contrasted in relation to the question of how sound inputs are able to influence behavior.
