This paper describes a computer software package developed at the University of Bath to aid the designer of hydraulic systems. The package is capable of simulating the dynamic and steady state behaviour of hydraulic circuits and its use does not require the designer to gain a high degree of computational skill. The paper continues by discussing methods employed both to minimize the size of the simulation program and to ensure that the program runs as quickly as possible. A case study is described and the paper concludes by taking a general view of the role of simulation in the design of hydraulic systems.
