Using Petri Net Tool to Study the Dynamic Behaviour of Power Systems Protections

Petri Nets (PN) are promising methods for modelling and simulating dynamic power systems. In this paper it was assessed the PN formalisms and linked to their mathematical capabilities based on their suitability to represent power systems processes. Present work assesses the ability of these tools to model specific features of power systems protections. We found that different tools are required to supply all capabilities that were concerned. Development and wide adoption of common applications would enable researchers and teachers to share models and use different tools to analyse protection systems without the need to convert to physical tools. Structural analysis can determine properties that are preserved during execution of the modelled system. Such properties include the following Iiveness, boundedness or coverability.
