Sustainability in modular design and construction: a case study of ‘The Stack’

The goals of sustainability are to meet people's basic needs and improve their quality of life while simultaneously ensuring that the natural systems, resources, and diversity upon which they depend are maintained and enhanced, both today and for future generations. Construction activities over a facility's life cycle are also connected with the broader problems and issues affecting the environment, including global warming, climate change, pollution and the depletion of valuable resources. Built facilities significantly impact human health, comfort, and productivity. Modular building is becoming increasingly popular in many countries due to its many benefits, including greater construction efficiency and productivity. This study investigated how modular building can support sustainability goals in the built environment via a deep case study of ‘The Stack’, a recently completed modular rental housing block in New York City.
