Comparison of FDIR technique between passive and active distribution systems

The complexity of distribution power systems are increasing due to the added interconnections and the increasing demand of power supply by the growing population of customers. Inclusion of distributed generation (DG) units in the current or new distribution power system is an effective solution for the problem aforementioned. The distribution system with or without DGs needs a robust, reliable and dependable protection scheme for their efficient and effective operation. In this paper, a new protection technique, fault detection, isolation and restoration (FDIR) is proposed for both passive (without DGs) and active (with DGs) distribution power systems. The proposed FDIR technique has software overcurrent (OC) relay models, fault locator logic (FLL) and sequential breaker coordination logic (SCL) to perform the fault detection isolation and restoration tasks. The developed FDIR protection scheme is tested on a one-feeder passive and/or active distribution system for different fault scenarios; and the Matlab/Simulink simulation results are presented to show the satisfactory operation of the proposed technique.
