Crystal growth from melts of high viscosity

The growing of large single crystals from glass forming melts is not so much a problem of principle, but rather a question of time and endurance, because of the small mobility of the atoms in such viscous melts. Therefore, the growth rates are unusually small resulting in extended growth periods. For the experimental procedure a top-seeding similar to the Czochralski or Nacken-Kyropoulos technique is most suitable. In consequence, such an experiment can be employed. The preparation of the seed crystals will be a difficult task needing several consecutive cycles of enlarging the grains, until a monocrystalline seed results. The compounds so far investigated are Li2B4O7, PbB4O7, BaB4O7, Bi3B5O12, BiB3O6, LiBGeO4, Zn3BPO7, and KMgP3O9. In most cases crystals with optically clear parts of at least 1 cm3 have been obtained.
