Telecommunications Network Management Standards - An Overview

The use of OS1 System Management Protocol (CMIP) for the management of telecommunications networks has received an industry-wide acceptance in the past year. This presentation is an overview of how the System Management Protocol, the associated information modeling principles and some of the system management functions are used by various standards groups and Bellcore to develop the specifications for the information exchanged across an Operations System (OS) Network Element (NE) interface and an OS-OS interface. Most of the work in standards, North American and International, has focused on Fault Management and Performance Monitoring. The overview will include a brief description of how functions such as event report management, summarization, and log control are used in developing Telecommunications Network Management (TMN) interface specifications along with the issues and reasons for certain modeling decisions. 0468 16.2.1 CH3134-4/92/0000-0468 $3.00
