A Simultaneous Simulation of Activity Chains and Traffic Flow

A simultaneous simulation of activity chains brings together two threads of research to provide a modelling framework for a number of recent issues in transportation planning, like the modelling of parking or the evaluation of information systems. The first thread, the consecutive simulation of activity chains, has been under development in Germany for the last fifteen years as an alternative approach to the "four-step" aggregate forecasting procedures. The second thread, the simulation of traffic flows, has been extensively applied to traffic engineering problems. The paper will present a short review of the developments in activity chain modelling, followed by a discussion of the new approach and a detailed description of an example imple-mentation.
