Measurement and modeling of collision avoidance behavior of drivers using three dimensional driving simulator

In this paper, the three-dimensional driving simulator (DS) using CAVE, which enables us to provide three-dimensional visual information, is developed. The developed DS is used to analyze the collision avoidance behavior characterized by the braking and steering operations at the instance of the sudden stopping of the preceding vehicle. A group method of data handling (GMDH) is applied to the measured data in order to build the analytical polynomial model of the drivers avoiding skill. From the analysis, it has been found that the information on the longitudinal distance and the lateral displacement between cars, and yaw angle of the car play central roles in the determination of the avoiding behavior.
