Abstract The influence of high biomass concentration on the operating conditions of a newly developed high-performance bioreactor, the impinging-stream loop reactor, combined with membrane filtration is discussed. The efficiency and the advantages of this combination with respect to economy, effluent concentration and operating conditions are shown in comparison to conventional wastewater treatment plants. Finally, a short summary of investigations with a pilot plant for treatment of landfill leachate are given.
