A SATELLITIC AUTOMATED HIGHWAY SYSTEM : VISUAL MODELING OF THE REQUIREMENTS USING RATIONAL ROSE AND UML

The Satellitic Automated highway System that will be introduced in this paper is an advanced form of Intelligent Transportation Systems and its integral part, the Automated Highway System. Canada's goals in achieving a safe, efficient, effective, and environmentally sustainable transportation sytem cannot be achieved without a suitable response to the sizable impact of the Techno-Social-Economic Challenge in general and to the wireless revolution in specific on the components of our transportation systems. A Satellitic Automated Highway may represent the Canadian futuristic target system for 2050 and beyond. Having approved target system is of great importance to the research and development community in Canada. A Satellitic Automated Highway System concept was developed with an effective and seamless integration of an Automated Highway System concept and a Stratospheric Satellitic Redundant Communication System concept. The Automated Highway System utilizes wireless technologies such as cellular and roadside beacons. The reliability of these technologies in a communication critical system is questionable. The communication links may be down due to several reasons, for example, topograhic, cell boundary crossings, coverage perimeter, and cost. This is a possibility that can happen even within the solid line communication links between the various components of the Automated Highway System. A Satellitic Automated Highway System will increase the reliability of such systems by provinding a back up communication system to be used when malfunction occurs in other communication technologies within the system. The paper will describe the proposed system by identifying its functional requirements. It will document also the development of an Itelligent Digital Mode (IDM). The system was developed in an object-oriented environment using Unified Modeling language (UML) as a notation, and Rational Rose as a case tool. A software model of the futuristic transportation sytem will be presented along with the Intelligent Digital Modem (IDM), which will be presented as a breakthrough in the communication system that will characterize the future trends in most of the Intelligent Transportation System developments. This summarizes a research in progress on this topic. For the covering abstract of this conference see ITRD number E201066. (A)
