Total (p,π + ) cross sections on light nuclei near the pion Coulomb barrier

Angle-integrated (p,..pi../sup +/) cross sections on /sup 9/Be, /sup 10/B, /sup 11/B, /sup 12/C, /sup 13/C, /sup 14/N, and /sup 16/O have been measured over the energy range 0.5 < or approx. = T/sub p/-T/sub threshold/ < or approx. = 10 MeV by detecting ..mu../sup +/ decays. By combining the present results with higher energy measurements we show that, for 1p-shell targets, the energy dependence of the (p,..pi../sup +/) reaction from T/sub ..pi../ approx. = 0.5 to approx. = 50 MeV can be explained in terms of pion phase space and barrier penetration.
