Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation

This chapter describes the application of real-time, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation for hydropower plant. This mode of simulation is a powerful tool for upgrading high-value plant that carries a severe financial penalty for loss of service. The concept and merits of HIL simulation and the distinctive features of real-time systems are reviewed. In order to focus on the core ideas, a simplified HIL simulation of the Dinorwig station is presented that illustrates the essential steps involved. This includes details of the implementation and measures taken to validate the responses by comparison with offline simulation and measured plant responses. Finally, the additional features included in a more recent and comprehensive version of the Dinorwig HIL simulator are outlined.
