Device Integration in SODA Using the Device Description Language

The scale and pace by which the pervasive Internet is evolving today demand urgently needed solutions for a new breed of integration technology that is scalable and autonomic. Current integration technology is ad-hoc, ldquoseasonalrdquo and suffers from major scalability problems. In this paper, we present a novel approach for device integration based on the Service Oriented Architecture model. We present the Device Description Language (DDL) and its implementation within the Atlas sensor platform and middleware. We demonstrate DDLpsilas capability for describing and integrating a broad range of devices ranging from a pinhead temperature sensor to a complex device such as a personal health device. We also summarize our efforts to standardize DDL within the SODA Alliance.
