LATERAL BUCKLING OF RAILROAD TRACKS DUE TO CONSTRAINED THERMAL EXPANSIONS — A CRITICAL SURVEY

SUMMARY The paper contains a critical survey of published results of track buckling tests as well as of analyses of track buckling in the lateral plane. It was found that the majority of the published analyses are not suitable for the determination of buckling temperatures. Shortcomings are pointed out and the effect of a number of simplifying assumptions on the analytical results are discussed. The aim of this study is to contribute toward a better understanding of the track buckling problem and to pave the way toward obtaining suitable analytical solutions.
