The role of intonation in speech perception

Past research of intonation at the Institute for Perception Research has been concerned with describing melodic properties of utterances in terms of perceptually relevant pitch events, without taking into consideration their possible communicative functions. The aim of this approach has been to establish the relationship between the continuously varying fundamental frequency of the speech signal and the corresponding discrete perceptual units.
