Abstract In recent years three canonical model structures have been suggested for the identification of Multi-Input/Multi-Output systems, which allow a systematical description of the system: the main model technique, the submodel technique and the subsubmodel technique. The ability and efficiency of these methods had been proved mainly by digital simulation. In this paper a practical application to a blast furnace is presented. The process of a blast furnace is very complex and until now no sufficient results are obtained by different analysing methods. Therefore, the blast furnace seems to be a suitable example to test the ability and efficiency of the above mentioned model structures. In this paper the preparation for identification and the results of estimation are presented.
