A Flexible On-line Transition Structure of Traffic Signal Phases

The key to building an advanced traffic signal control system is the control strategies and the parameter models, and the purpose to construct a signal phasing transition structure is to lay a foundation upon which the control strategies can be realized. Traditional control strategies, like inductive and adaptive controls, emphasize transition rules and optimization of model design. Through a comparison of various control strategies, this paper starts with the dual-ring structure in NEMA TS2 (U.S.), and redefines signal phases. Then the paper formulates unified nesting rules, and finally establishes the on-line phase transition structure with two patterns. The characteristics of the structure include the flexibility of adaptation to traffic fluctuation, and a standard description.
