Research on Digital Control Chip for Voltage Regulator Modules

New voltage regulator modules (VRM) with lower output voltage below 1V,higher current over 100A,and faster transient response more than 100A/?滋s,are required for next generation high-speed processors.According to the demands of processors,this paper analyzes the trend of next generation VRM and proposes a novel control strategy,a most powerful control method,performing respectively at transient and steady state. A novel chip architecture of digital control is proposed.Flexible IP cores of the structure are designed and verified. The experiment results based on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) of Cyclone,series of Altera prove the good performance of the controller. The output voltage tolerance of single phase Synchronous Buck is within ±6% when the current slew rate of load is 23A/?滋s.
