The Observatory of Automated Metros, part of the International Association of Public Transport, gathers and disseminates information regarding the current status and trends concerning automated (i.e., unattended) transit trains. This article presents current statistics gathered by the Observatory. To date, 25 cities in four continents have automated metros. Only one of the cities, Las Vegas, is in the United States. Although most of the cities with automated train operations are in Europe and Asia, Latin American and Middle Eastern cities are beginning to embrace the technology. The earliest automated line dates from 1981. There are currently 593 km of automated metro lines in operation, with over 100 km inaugurated in 2011 alone. The Observatory predicts that during the next decade the yearly average growth of automated trains will be five times the rate achieved during the last 10 years. In order to further encourage this growth, the Observatory sponsors regular seminars to allow attendees to keep up with the latest developments and share their experiences in the automation field.
