Macro and micro diversity in land-mobile cellular radio telephony networks with discontinuous voice transmission

Signals in a macrocellular environment are subject to both shadow fading and multipath fading. The effects of shadow fading can be combated by using more than one base station per cell (macro diversity), while the effects of multipath fading can be decreased by using more than one antenna per base station (micro diversity). In this paper a model for the calculation of outage probabilities in an interference limited macrocellular system, with both multipath fading and shadow fading, is investigated considering both macro and micro diversity. Performance is evaluated for three site macro diversity, two branch micro diversity and combined two branch micro and macro diversity.
