Talking with Jess: Looking at How Metalanguage Assisted Explanation Writing in the Middle Years

This paper tracks the growing proficiency with which a Year 6 student has been able to recognise and discuss specific grammatical knowledge in writing explanations texts: to correctly use a metalanguage to describe her writing. It will be suggested that the development of metalinguistic knowledge assists students to write texts successfully.
