SECURESTATION: Passenger Station and Terminal Design for Safety, Security and Resilience to Terrorist Attack

European Union (EU) Member states have faced a range of covert attacks to their security over the past decade from international terrorism. The September 11 2001 attacks in the United States made it clear that terrorist threats have to be acknowledged as a threat to open and democratic societies. Terrorism has a history of targeting public transport systems both worldwide, for example in Mumbai and Moscow, and in a number of EU Member States, including the United Kingdom, France and Spain. The SECURESTATION project (co-funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme), is a response to the challenge of improving passenger station and terminal resilience to terrorist attacks and safety incidents through technologies and methodologies enabling designers to reduce the impact of bomb blast, fire and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) attacks involving particle dispersion on passengers, staff and infrastructure.
