Comparison of methods for chipping quality estimation in turning

Four methods for estimating chipping quality or chip length in a rough turning process are compared in this paper. In two of the methods, chip break frequency is detected from the spectrum of the acoustic emission signal. In the third, chip length is analyzed based on features in a time domain signal. And in the final method, the statistics of the time domain signal are used to estimate chipping quality. Expert data collected from cutting experiments related to the signals is used as a reference. The estimates are fit to the data and the classification power of the resulting model with regards to detecting chipping quality and continuous chip is assessed. The results achieved by different methods and the computing time consumed by the methods is compared and further study topics suggested.
