Ternary Pulse Compression Sequences

Binary sequences having good aperiodic autocorrelation upto a length (N) of 59 have been reported in the literature. This paper describes procedures for obtaining ternary sequences with good aperiodic autocorrelation. The first procedure uses terminal admissibility technique and sequences of even length upto N=32 using this technique are listed. The latter procedures use construction for skew-symmetry which ensures odd-shift orthonormality for sequences of odd lengths and alternation of some suitably chosen, symmetrically placed elements to zero in binary odd-shift orthonormal sequences. Good sequences of odd lengths upto N=75 obtained by these procedures are listed. The efficacy of these algorithms is established by comparing these sequences with binary sequences reported earlier with respect to a new parameter termed quality factor which is the product of merit factor and energy efficiency, the latter being less than unity for ternary sequences.
