Future generation information systems

Recent technological advances are forcing the evolution of a new generation of information systems whose introduction will radically change the information industry. In support of this thesis, recent developments in microcomputer technology, mass‐storage technology, and telecommunications technology are surveyed, and it is shown how these new technologies are driving the development of a generation of information systems fundamentally different from the present generation. Consideration is given to the major changes in the information industry precipitated by the arrival of the new breed of information systems. In conclusion, the author discusses telecommunication technologies currently in the planning stages, and speculates regarding further information system evolution and concomitant effects on the information industry. © 1986 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
