The impact of wind power on power system transient stability based on probabilistic weighting method

This paper reports on the influence of wind power on transient stability of a power system taking into consideration the stochastic nature of a disturbance to the network. Traditionally, transient stability is evaluated using the deterministic method. This technique is usually considered for a single operating condition so called the worst case scenario. However, factors that affect the transient stability of a power system such as types of disturbance and its location, the clearing time, and even the pre-disturbance system state are all random processes. A probabilistic method using conditional probability is used in analysing the effects of wind generator technologies, wind power location, and wind power penetration level on the transient stability of a power system. The indices for probability of stability are established; comparison is made between the probabilistic and deterministic techniques in the evaluation of risk of instability of a power system consisting wind generators.
