A New Classification System for Production Control

Much of the recent research activity in the area of Production and Inventory Control (P&IC) has concentrated on the question of how to make various P&IC strategies work. This paper adopts a different perspective. The paper presents the view that the greatest problem currently faced by manufacturing management is the selection of a P&IC system best suited to their particular requirements. The idea that companies can be separated into discernible categories and the informational requirements of these categories be specified is currently being explored as part of the RMIT Manufacturing Information System (M.I.S) project. The aim of this paper therefore, is to present the current research platform for public consideration.
