INTRODUCTION AND EXPERIMENTAL ASPECTS OF THE NATO RTO TASK GROUP AVT-080: "STUDY OF VORTEX BREAKDOWN OVER SLENDER WINGS"

As an introduction to the ECCOMAS 2004 special technological sessions about the NATO/AVT Task Group AVT-080: "Leading-edge Vortex Breakdown over Slender Wings", this paper outlines the objectives and the activities of the working group. It highlights the progress in the experimental, analytical and computational components during the three-year study, which includes eight comprehensive experimental cases, ten state-of-the-art numerical solutions and three incentive analytical solutions. The survey of experimental results includes time-average results at static model conditions, ensemble- average results at dynamic model conditions and unsteady results at static/dynamic model conditions. The numerical solutions include results from different numerical methods, codes and grids on a benchmark of ONERA 70° delta wing and other cases. The effects of tunnel wall interference and interactions between vortices are included in the numerical solutions. Moreover the unsteady substructure in the shear layer and their origin have been studied by a very high order computational method. The analytical solutions range from a simple engineering model, vortex breakdown empiricisms to simplified Non-linear Indicial Response in conjunction with Internal State-Space representations.
