Aspect ratio, friction forces and normal forces in strip rolling

Using a sensor developed in the author's department, normal and friction forces have been measured at the interface in the cold rolling of aluminum. The development of the sensor has been published previously for an aspect ratio (width/thickness) of 2.3, the results obtained in the use of the sensor showing that fraction is not constant throughout the roll gap but varies with time. A redesigned sensor, based upon that of the earlier design, has been used successfully to conduct a series of further tests for several different aspect ratios; the intention being to observe the effect of aspect ratio upon friction. The results of these experiments are presented and discussed.
