Introduction and fundamental requirements of neuroprostheses

Implantable neuroprostheses are an emerging technology that have the potential to restore significant function to individuals who have become disabled due to trauma or disease. Neuroprostheses deliver electrical current to the neuromuscular system and/or record electrical signals from the neuromuscular system. The potential of neuroprostheses to restore function is very broad, and essentially all advances in this field have occurred since the early 1960s. It is anticipated that the number and variety of applications will continue to broaden, and that the function restored by these systems will continue to improve.
