Fetal Alcohol Syndrome in Adolescents and Adults

To the Editor. —We read with interest the article by Streissguth et al 1 on the adolescent and adult manifestations of FAS. As they explain, when the craniofacial features so characteristic of FAS diminish with age, diagnosis becomes more difficult. The authors neglect to mention that neuroimaging may assist in the diagnosis. Fetal alcohol syndrome is the second most common entity associated with agenesis of the corpus callosum, 2 a rare abnormality present in 2.3% of developmentally disabled individuals, 3 an incidence 10 to 20 times greater than in the general population. 3 As FAS becomes more widely recognized, we suspect that it will become the most common syndrome associated with agenesis of the corpus callosum.
