Tracking transient temperatures with liquid crystals

Abstract The theoretical basis of the use of the liquid crystal technique to obtain transient thermal data is discussed. Results of calibrations of liquid crystal temperature sensors are given. The effects of crystal aging, lighting effects, observer bias, etc., on accuracy are discussed. The sensitivity of liquid crystal tapes as sensors of dynamic temperature changes is quite high. The accuracy of the technique is determined primarily by the type of calibration apparatus used.
