Threshold crossings in nonlinear systems and ship capsize prevention

Ships capsize when the roll response in a random seaway exceeds a critical threshold. The ability to predict the frequency of occurrence of crossings of high roll thresholds should enable design criteria for capsize prevention to be formulated on a more scientific basis than has been possible before.
