Culture reflects a group's effort to cope and learn and is the residue of the learning process.

Quantifying Etienne Wegner’s model for communities of practice using popular Open Source development projects at SourceForge, net coupled with Diffusion Theory creates a guide to measure learning in Open Source Communities of Practice. Specifically, trying to quantify the size of the community based on ‘legitimate peripheral participation’ generates interesting questions regarding how to measure learning, what is learning/knowledge, and what dynamics are required to build bridges between adjacent participation levels.
