Abstract The demand for Canada's natural resources and their wide distribution in remote areas have prompted development of off-road transport technology in that country. New requirements for compatibility of off-road transport systems with environmental features has also stimulated innovation. In the light of these concepts, the Faculty of Engineering at Carleton University sponsored a series of public lectures in 1971–1972. These lectures form the main subject of this special issue of the Journal of Terramechanics .
