A STUDY ON THE SAFETY ASSESSMENT OF MARINE TRAFFIC

When designing new marine traffic routes, it is desirable that the safety of the maritime environment related to the shipping traffic is assessed quantitatively by traffic simulation. In this paper the authors propose a model for quantitative evaluation of the load of collision avoidance manoeuvring. Using the experimental results obtained from an actual ship, successful agreement is shown between the proposed evaluation model and the subjective difficulty felt by the shiphandler. The relationship between the load of collision avoidance manoeuvring and two parameters, ie, the aspect angle of the meeting ships and the velocity difference of the meeting ships, is obtained using the proposed model.
