Evaluating The Validity Of Interocclusal Plaster Records Made While Recording Protrusive Jaw Relation, Using Extraoral Tracing Device

Aim and Objective - To evaluate the validity of plaster interocclusal records obtained in protrusive relation using extra-oral gothic arch tracing method and to observe the perforation or non-perforation in the protrusive records. Method – 30 protrusive interocclusal records were made after gothic arch tracing procedure. Samples were then evaluated for perforation or non-perforation. The non-perforated samples were then measured for thickness of plaster present in between the centre bearing plate and point, using measuring guage. Results - 23 (76.66%) records amongst the total 30, were nonperforated and 7 (23.33%) were perforated. Average thickness of plaster present in between the centre bearing plate and point in 23 non-perforated samples was found to be 0.63mm. Conclusion - Protrusive plaster records may be non-perforated as against the belief that it should be perforated. Proper instructions and guidance to the patient should be provided at the time of making protrusive records , also strict material manipulation instructions should also be followed by the operator while using interocclusal recording material, to obtain accurate records.
