3D Printing Methods Applicable in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Due to its unprecedented capabilities and flexibility for fabricating objects of different materials with complex geometries, three-dimensional (3D) printing has become a popular approach with ever-growing applications in various fields. Dentistry and maxillofacial surgery have also benefited from the advantages of 3D printing techniques. This chapter begins with the historical background of 3D printing and then provides a brief overview of five methods that are the most applicable in dentistry and oromaxillofacial surgeries, including stereolithography (SLA), selective laser sintering (SLS), fused deposition modeling (FDM), photopolymer jetting (PPJ), and powder binder printing (PBP). For each of these methods, after studying the process and addressing the advantages and limitations, the oral and maxillofacial applications are deliberated. The printability of materials in four groups of metals, ceramics, synthetic polymers, and hydrogels are discussed by introducing the printable materials of each group, which may have potential applications in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
