Approach magnification is safer than bioptic telescopic spectacles for operating a motor vehicle.

Bioptic telescopic spectacles (BTS) are hazardous for operating a motor vehicle due to the small magnified field (8 deg), the total surrounding blind area (24 deg), and the time it takes to change fixation from the spectacle lens to telescope and back to spectacle lens (3 seconds). Approach magnification is achieved by moving closer to the object. This type of magnification is safer because the field of vision and depth perception are not affected; also, there is no need to change fixation.
