A Congestion Control Mechanism for Enterprise Network Traac over Atm Networks

ABR is an emerging ATM-based telecommunication service which dynamically allocates bandwidth to the users according to the available bandwidth in the network. However, research shows that ABR-based connections suuer from congestion at LAN-ATM gateway when ATM network abruptly reduces bandwidth available to the gateway. Gateway congestion may result in high packet loss. This article proposes a gateway congestion control mechanism which controls the rate of outgoing enterprise traac according to the available bandwidth at the gateway. Our analysis shows how to achieve a stable system and keep packet loss below a desired threshold. Analytical results are validated by simulation.
