A microprocessor based data reduction scheme for real-time monitoring, communication and storage of ECG signal is described, The method basically finds out the different peaks, valleys and other points of the ECG waveform which contributed significantly to preserve the morphological details of the waveform with the help of the Moving Slope technique, The reconstruction of the waveform is done by linear interpolation method. The average reduction over a number of data sets was found to be 74.5% with a relatively low average PRD value of 4.3%. The algorithm could be operated 5 times the real time with a 8 bit microcomputer system having a system cloak of 3 MHz at a sample rate of 250 s/sec.
