Second Coming: Piers and Towers of a Major Cable-Stayed Bridge in South Korea are Currently Under Construction

South Korea's cable-stayed Geumbit Grand Bridge's piers and main towers are currently under construction. The 2,028 m two lane highway bridge will be a fixed connection between the South Korean mainland and Geo-Geum Island. The Geumbit Grand is believed to be the world's only bridge using a unique cable configuration in which, for structural and aesthetic reasons, 84 cables are arranged in seven-cable bundles. Cable replacement and loss are no problem since all cables in one bundle have almost uniform loads. The authors discuss construction details.
