Linear programming models are generally based on crop technologies observed under current conditions. However, when the impact of considerable reductions of water availability or increases of water cost has to be evaluated, this could become a limitation. This paper uses a regional farmbased linear programming model articulated in two ways: the first refers only to the crop technologies observed in the current conditions; the second refers also to new irrigation technologies characterized by water requirements and yields lower than those observed in the current situation. These alternative technologies have been reconstructed by using the Cropwat model developed by FAO. Comparing the results derived by simulation performed on both models allows to understand when the introduction of deficit irrigation technologies appears to be potentially useful.
