IMPROVEMENT OF REAL TIME PASSENGER INFORMATION BY FLOATING CAR OBSERVERS

Many larger public transport companies offer current arrival time information at roadside stops. Particularly if public and individual traffic share common roads, the reliable estimation of arrival times over a longer period of time is a problem which is difficult to solve. An overall knowledge of traffic conditions is missing. To improve this, it is suggested that public transport vehicles should carry devices which can observe the road environment and also traffic flows. Thus, parameters of traffic can be derived from observation results. Such equipped vehicles are then underway as Floating Car Observers (FCO) and can gather traffic conditions throughout the public transport route network. For the covering abstract see ITRD E134653.
